...obwohl sich Dr. Peter Brown im Zeugenschutzprogramm befindet und seiner Tätigkeit als Arzt mit vollem Elan nachgeht, wird er doch von seiner Mafia-Vergangenheit eingeholt und von einer Sekunde auf die andere ist in seinem Leben nichts mehr wie es war.
Skurill, schräg, witzig und doch ein Krimi wie man es sich nur wünschen kann - spannend bis zum Schluss!

Wer mal wieder einen erfrischend originellen, temporeichen, schockierenden aber dennoch humorvollen Thriller lesen will, liegt bei Josh Bazells „Beat the Reaper“ genau richtig. Der abgedrehte Plot und sein faszinierender Protagonist Dr. Peter Brown alias Pietro „Bearclaw“ Brnwa haben zumindest mich von der ersten bis zur letzten Seite absolut in ihren Bann gezogen. Dabei habe ich gedacht, dass man dem Mafia-Stoff nichts Neues mehr abgewinnen kann. Aber wenn ein ehemaliger Hitman des Mobs im Rahmen des Zeugenschutzprogramms als Arzt in einem New Yorker Krankenhaus landet und dort auffliegt, ist das Szenario für eine bitterböse, zutiefst zynische, blutige und auch nicht ganz ernst zu nehmende Story, die an einen Tarantino-Film erinnert, geschaffen. Der Thriller überzeugt durch seinen rasanten Erzählstil – eigentlich spielt sich die Handlung innerhalb eines einzigen Tages im Krankenhaus ab, aber Pietro erzählt in Rückblenden aus seinem Leben – und seine abgebrühte, aus dem Leben gegriffene und bisweilen derbe Sprache. Und das Buch ist nicht nur sehr unterhaltsam, sondern auch lehrreich: in zahlreichen Fußnoten erklärt Bazell medizinische Begriffe, juristische Sachverhalte und andere Details. Das mag den einen oder anderen Leser nerven, ich als Pratchett-Fan bin an Fußnoten gewöhnt ;-) Natürlich ist „Beat the Reaper“ keine große Literatur, aber verdammt gute Unterhaltung – und Bücher sollen in erster Linie ja unterhalten, oder etwa nicht?
