A Letter To A Friend On Swedenborgianism is a book written by Otis Clapp in 1842. The book is a detailed explanation of Swedenborgianism, a religious movement founded by Emanuel Swedenborg in the 18th century. In the book, Clapp addresses a friend who has expressed interest in the movement and provides a comprehensive overview of its beliefs, practices, and history.Clapp begins by introducing the life and works of Swedenborg, who claimed to have had spiritual visions and conversations with angels. He then delves into the core beliefs of Swedenborgianism, including the existence of a spiritual world, the concept of divine love and wisdom, and the idea that all religions have some truth in them. The book also explores the Swedenborgian view of the afterlife, which includes the idea that individuals continue to grow and learn in the spiritual world. Clapp also discusses the role of the church in Swedenborgianism and how it differs from traditional Christian churches.Throughout the book, Clapp provides numerous quotes and references from Swedenborg's writings to support his explanations of the movement's beliefs. He also addresses common criticisms and misconceptions about Swedenborgianism, such as the idea that it is a cult or that its followers reject science.Overall, A Letter To A Friend On Swedenborgianism is a thorough and informative introduction to the beliefs and practices of Swedenborgianism. It is written in a conversational tone and is accessible to readers of all backgrounds and levels of knowledge on the subject. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
