What gives a government its power-and why do people obey it? In Leviathan, Thomas Hobbes confronts these questions head-on, laying out one of the most influential theories of authority ever written. Arguing that human beings, left to their own devices, exist in a state of conflict and insecurity, Hobbes proposes that only a strong, unified authority can create order and stability. Written in direct, forceful prose, the work explores the origins of political society, the nature of law, and the balance between individual freedom and collective security. Hobbes's concept of the social contract-an agreement among individuals to submit to a governing power-became a cornerstone of modern political thought and continues to shape debates about government, rights, and responsibility. This edition presents Leviathan as a living work of ideas, accessible to modern readers interested in politics, philosophy, and the enduring question of how societies hold together. Whether approached as a foundational text or a provocative argument, it remains essential reading for understanding the structure of power in the modern world.
