Thomas Paine turns the revolutionary principles of liberty and reason toward religion, challenging inherited authority and defending the individual's right to examine belief without fear. In The Age of Reason, Paine declares his belief in one God while rejecting organized religion, priestly power, miracles, prophecy, and the claim that any sacred text represents an infallible divine revelation. Written during the political and religious upheavals of the French Revolution, The Age of Reason became one of the most controversial books of its era. It damaged Paine's reputation among many former admirers but exerted a lasting influence on deism, biblical criticism, religious skepticism, freedom of conscience, and the separation of church and state. More than two centuries later, it remains a forceful defense of intellectual independence and the right to question religious authority.
