One Second After

Although I was very captivated by this book, I was quite confused by its writing. The author describes in great detail the aftermath of an EMP strike on the United States, with riveting narration of how the town of Black Mountain tries to survive. But at the same time, the characters are poorly developed, with most of the interactions feeling unnatural and one-sided, and people mostly die off to make the story more compelling.
