Wer sich mit Japan beschäftigt, sollte dieses Buch gelesen haben. Die Übersetzungen von Seidensticker ins Englische sind immer hervorragend. Diese Geschichte über die Schwestern Makioka beschreibt die Situation von Frauen inmitten großer gesellschaftlicher Veränderungen und Tanizaki ist der große Ästhet unter den japanischen Schriftstellern und Seidensticker gelingt es den Ton Tanizakis zu treffen und zu übertragen.
