Campaigning with Crook and Stories of Army Life is a memoir written by Captain Charles King, a veteran of the American Indian Wars. The book chronicles King's experiences serving under General George Crook during the late 19th century, including his participation in the Battle of the Rosebud and the Battle of Slim Buttes. The memoir also includes anecdotes and stories about life in the army, from the daily routines and hardships of military life to the camaraderie and humor shared among soldiers. King's writing provides a firsthand account of the challenges and dangers faced by soldiers in the frontier West, as well as the complex relationships between the military, Native American tribes, and settlers. Overall, Campaigning with Crook and Stories of Army Life offers a fascinating glimpse into a pivotal period in American history, through the eyes of a soldier who lived it.1890. Illustrated. The literary novels of Charles King are ones of Victorian ideals, morals and views played out on western frontiers, the Civil War, and the Spanish Philippines. His often melodramatic stories are based on personal adventures and experiences with detailed observations and opinions arising from specific times and places. Publishing over 60 novels and numerous short stories, King was a popular author in his day, yet today is known mostly for this volume, Campaigning With Crook.
