Prisoners is a novel written by Mary Cholmondeley that was first published in 1915. The story is set in the early 20th century and revolves around two sisters, Rachel and Ursula West, who live in a small village in England. Rachel is married to a wealthy businessman, while Ursula is a spinster who lives a solitary life. The novel explores the themes of love, marriage, class, and gender roles in society. Rachel's marriage is unhappy and she longs for a more fulfilling life, while Ursula struggles with her own desires and societal expectations of women. The plot takes a dramatic turn when Rachel is accused of murdering her husband. The sisters' relationship is put to the test as they navigate the legal system and try to prove Rachel's innocence. Prisoners is a thought-provoking novel that delves into the complexities of human relationships and the constraints of societal norms.""I said good-bye to him in the garden, and then the garden was surrounded because they were looking for the murderer of the marchese, and Michael could not get out. And he was afraid of being seen, for fear of compromising me. So he hid behind the screen in my room. And then--you know the rest--the police came in and searched my rooms, and Michael came out and confessed to the murder, and said I had let him hide in my room. It was the only thing to do to save my reputation, and he did it.""This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
