Known for the unique use of the Stream of Consciousness technique, To the Lighthouse is a masterpiece from the modernist period. Hardly containing plot, the novel portrays the complex net of relationships between the characters and their individual thoughts, giving the reader insight into their minds otherwise not possible. A truly inspiring book and a must read for anybody interested in early twentieth century literature or Virginia Woolf!

Virginia Woolf gilt ja bekanntlich als eine der größten Schriftstellerinnen des 20. Jahrhunderts und ist Vorbild für viele Autorinnen, die nach ihr kamen. In gewisser Weise verstehe ich das ja, denn ihre Art zu schreiben ist definitiv modernistisch und ungewöhnlich. Allerdings ist es auch etwas ermüdend, wenn auf insgesamt über 150 Seiten ein Zeitraum von nur 2 Tagen erzählt wird und die vielen, vielen Charaktere hauptsächlich und sehr verworren denken und ihr Gefühls- und Seelenleben dargestellt wird.
Sicherlich sollte man mal etwas von ihr gelesen haben und ich bereue es auch nicht, aber wer auf der Suche nach Unterhaltung und auch einer halbwegs fesselnden Handlung ist, sollte um "To the lighthouse" besser einen Bogen machen.
