Der 1929 auf Kuba geborene Autor wurde besonders durch den experimentellen Umgang mit der Sprache bekannt und erhielt dafür 1997 den Miguel de Cervantes Preis, die wichtigste Literaturauszeichnung der lateinamerikanischen Literatur. Guillermo Cabrera ist 2005 verstorben.
