When Martha is accused of witchcraft, and the whisperings in the community escalate, she makes her daughter promise not to stand up for her if the case is taken to court. As Sarah and her brothers are hauled into the prison themselves, the vicious cruelty of the trials is apparent, as the Carrier family, along with other innocents, are starved and deprived of any decency, battling their way through the hysteria with the sheer willpower their mother has taught them.

Schon lange beschäftigten Kathleen Kent die Geschichten über ihrer Urahnin Martha Carrier. Aber erst als die Brokerin der New Yorker Rohstoff-Börse 1991 beruflich viel nach Russland reisen musste, fand sie auf den langen Flügen endlich die Zeit um an ihrem Romanprojekt zu arbeiten. Doch ihre Russlandaufenthalte hatten auch einen tragischen Nebeneffekt: Nach siebenjähriger Arbeit in dem stark von Tschernobyl verstrahlten Weißrussland erkrankte sie schwer. Die folgenden Jahre waren vom Kampf gegen die Krankheit geprägt. Doch Kathleen Kent hatte sich fest in den Kopf gesetzt, für ihren Sohn die Erinnerungen an Martha Carrier niederzuschreiben. Das Schreiben hatte eine so tröstende und heilende Wirkung auf sie, dass sie mit Abschluss der Tochter der Ketzerin voll genesen ist und nun ihre Veröffentlichung in den USA, Großbritannien, Italien, Spanien, den Niederlanden und Deutschland genießen kann.
