Michel Kazanski, Ph.D. (1986) in Archaeology, University of Paris I, is Senior Research Fellow, Centre for the History and Civilization of Byzantium, College de France, Paris. He has published extensively on the archaeology of the Great Migration period. His latest book is "Les Slaves. Les origines (Ier-VIIer siecle apres J.-C." (Paris, 1999). Vanessa Soupault, Ph.D. (1997) in Archaeology, University of Paris I, is currently living in Hong Kong. Her doctoral thesis "Les elements metalliques du costume masculin du IIIe au Ve siecle dans la partie orientale de l'empire romain" is due to appear in "British Archaeological Reports.""
