The nature and semantic role of tenses remains controversial in current research despite important new insights. This critique aims to clarify the questions raised with reference to the example of French. From a perspective based in integrative linguistics (IL) it develops a detailed new analysis of the French system of tenses. This analysis aims to achieve greater coherence and particularly includes uses beyond the indicative. The book is aimed at professional linguists and candidates for advanced examinations.
