The Storyteller by Jodi Picoult: Conversation Starters

Mario Vargas Llosa is a Peruvian writer who studied at the University of San Carlos in Peru along with Saul Zuratas as they both studied hard to earn a degree. He is the story’s first narrator; he tells about the life of Saul as a kindhearted man who he became friends with during their university life. Mario described their friendship as an awakening and raised questions about how Saul had a different mindset than his. He told about how Saul was an intelligent and cheerful person. Mario also mentioned initially noticing Saul’s scar. The story developed from Mario's time in Florence, Italy, where he visited a small gallery that exhibited tribal artifacts and a couple of photographs. He was astounded upon seeing a photo of the tribe of Machiguenga being accompanied by a particular person whose identity was familiar to Vargas Llosa. From this event, the flashback of their story began, and the experiences they had unfolded together with Saul's viewpoints and beliefs regarding the Amazonian tribe of Peru. The story depicts themes of globalization, imperialism, invasion, slavery, and several aspects of trying to penetrate the most isolated tribes to get them along with modernization and the idealism of the outside world. The story of Saul also reflects a man's ability to choose what’s right over ingenuity, progress, and the value of traditions over advancement.
