This book addresses the preparation and application of design layout analyses with concurrent engineering teams in six steps that capture design intent and add value to design process. It offers tools for eliminating costly trial-and-error approaches and delivering economically viable products. The authors discuss product design techniques that alleviate the constraints between product definition, manufacturing, and inspection, the prediction of variation effects on product function and manufacturing efficiency, functional inspection techniques that include CMM measurement, optical comparators, and surface plate and functional gaging.…mehr

Robert G. Campbell is Professor of Engineering. William Rainey Harper College, Palatine, Illinois. He has over thirty years of professional experience in teaching and technical management in a variety of manufacturing companies and industries. He has provided training and consulting services to industrial firms and government laboratories in the areas of concurrent engineering and application of GD&T to product definition. The author or coauthor of numerous professional publications, he is an active member of four American Society of Mechanical Engineers committees in the engineering graphics (GD&T) and dimensional metrology areas. A licensed Professional Engineer, Mr. Campbell received the B.S.M.E. and M.S.E. degrees from Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana, and the M.B.A. degree from the University of Chicago, lllinois. Edward S. Roth is president and founder of Productivity Services, Albuquerque, New Mexico. Over the past 40 years, he has trained thousands of professionals at over 100 companies in the applications of GD&T in concurrent engineering, design for low-cost manufacturing, and functional gaging and inspection. The author of the first books on these subjects and the originator of the bonus tolerancing and zero positional tolerancing concepts, he is the past international president of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers. A former member of the Sandia National Laboratories committee that developed the GD&T standard used by the Atomic Energy Commission, he has taught GD&T, and functional gaging and inspection to hundreds of component suppliers in the nuclear industry. He is a former member of four ASME metrology (B89) standards committees and the recipient of the ASTME Gold Medal and the NSPE Archimedes Engineering Award. A Registered Professional Manufacturing and Industrial Engineer, he has served as an adjunct professor at the University of New Mexico, teaching Total Quality Management and advanced manufacturing technology. He is a graduate of the Pennsylvania State University, and has done graduate work at the University of Colorado and the University of New Mexico.
