This textbook for advanced undergraduates and graduate students covers the analysis, design and construction of shallow and deep foundations and retaining structures, and the stability analysis and mitigation of slopes. It progressively introduces critical state soil mechanics and plasticity theories such as plastic limit analysis and cavity expansion theories before leading into the theories of foundation, lateral earth pressure and slope stability analysis. It also introduces current construction and testing methods.
Also with Excel (TM) spreadsheets for all examples in the book, and PowerPoint lecture slides and a solutions manual for lecturers.

Autorenporträt
An-Bin Huang is a Professor at National Chiao Tung University, Taiwan. He worked as a practicing geotechnical engineer for many years in Chicago before entering academia. He received the 1995 Distinguished Research Award from the Ministry of Science and Technology of Taiwan and was the 7th James K. Mitchell Lecturer of the International Society of Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering.

Hai-Sui Yu is Pro-Vice-Chancellor at the University of Leeds, UK, and is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering. Prizes awarded to him include the Chandra Desai Medal of the International Association for Computer Methods and Advances in Geomechanics in 2008, the Telford Medal of the Institution of Civil Engineers London in 2000, the Trollope Medal of the Australian Geomechanics Society in 1998, an Overseas Master awarded by the Chinese Ministry of Education in 2013, and the Outstanding Contributions Medal of the International Association for Computer Methods and Advances in Geomechanics in 2014.

Rezensionen
"The book puts particular emphasis on developing fundamental understanding of stress-strain-strength behavior of soils, and analytical skills related to engineering design of shallow foundations, retaining structures, braced excavations, deep foundations and slope stability analysis. With many illustrations and carefully designed examples, the book makes it particularly easy for readers to digest and consolidate these fundamental concepts, and be guided step by step through various analytical procedures."
