Wissenschaftlicher Aufsatz aus dem Jahr 2009 im Fachbereich Geowissenschaften / Geographie - Bevölkerungsgeographie, Stadt- u. Raumplanung, Note: 1,3, Europa-Universität Viadrina Frankfurt (Oder), Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: This paper seeks to answer the question: Is Bangkok a global city? Throughout the first section of this paper a brief review of Global City research is performed. The outcome is that neither globalization nor global city is a consistently defined concept. In the next chapters criteria are extracted from Friedmann's, Sassen's, Castell's and Taylor's theoretical frameworks in order to define the concept of a "global city". Globalization is defined as concept characterized by an increase of worldwide socioeconomic relations and it is furthermore operationalized as transboundary economic activities of global players between international cities. After applying Friedmanns' and Sassens' theses, aided by Taylors' empirical findings and other authors' observations about Bangkok, this south-east Asian city could be identified as a global city.
