He also authored The Westies, a national bestseller, Born to Kill, which was nominated for an Edgar Award, and The Corporation. His journalism has appeared in Esquire, Playboy, and New York magazine, among other publications. His screenwriting credits include episodes for the television dramas NYPD Blue and Homicide, for which he was awarded the Humanitas Prize. He lives in New York City.

Lange Nächte in Havanna
Wie die Mafia Kuba in Besitz nahm – und an Fidel Castro verlor
Die einen feiern sie, die anderen wünschen bis heute, sie hätte nie stattgefunden: die kubanische Revolution. Anfang dieses Jahres wurde auf Kuba selbst ihr sechzigster Jahrestag gefeiert, mit jenem selten gewordenen sozialistisch-kitschigem Pathos alternder Revolutionäre. Auf der anderen Seite des Meeres, in und um Miami, stimmten die Exil-Kubaner wieder einmal ihre altbekannten Klagelieder an von der verlorenen Heimat, von Flucht und Vertreibung und von der Bösartigkeit des Regimes Castro. Über Pomp und Klage ist aber schnell vergessen, dass es einst sehr gute Gründe gab für Castros Revolution.
Denn in den vierziger und fünfziger Jahren des letzten Jahrhunderts war aus der Hauptstadt Havanna „eine unberechenbare Mischung aus Monte Carlo, Casablanca und der alten Stadt Cadiz geworden, ein Hexengebräu aus Glücksspiel, aus heimlichen Plänen für die Revolution, aus grausamer Unterdrückung und aus Gangstertum”. So beschreibt der irisch-amerikanische Journalist und Krimiautor T. J. English die Stimmung am Vorabend des 1. Januar 1959, als Castro mit seinen Männern das Regime von General Fulgencio Batista stürzte und auf Kuba die Macht übernahm. Batista hatte Havanna zum Paradies für Glücksspieler gemacht, Investoren angelockt und Lizenzen für Casinos verteilt. Es ist nicht schwer, sich vorzustellen, welche Art von Investoren dieses Geschäft interessierte – und so beschreibt English in „Havana Nocturne” denn auch, wie der „Mob”, die Mafia, auf Kuba die Macht übernahm – gelungen ist ihm dabei ein ausgezeichnetes Sachbuch, das sich so spannend liest wie ein Thriller.
Eine Insel für die Mafia, das war schon lange der Traum des legendären Mobsterfinanziers Meyer Lansky. Er war es, der seine Partner davon überzeugte, dass Kuba der ideale Ort für ihre Art von Geschäften sein könnte, er gewann berüchtigte Bosse wie Charles „Lucky” Luciano, der als einer der ersten von einem weltweiten kriminellen Syndikat träumte; Santo Trafficante aus Tampa; Thomas „Three Fingers” Lucchese aus New York. Über die Weihnachtstage 1946 also trafen sich auf Lanskys Einladung mehr als zwanzig der mächtigsten Mafiabosse Amerikas in einer Suite des damals nobelsten Hotels von Havanna, dem Nacional, um aus der Stadt eine „Party zu machen, die niemals aufhören wird”. Über die nächste Dekade bauten sie sich im tropischen Paradies ihr Imperium, sie wurden die wahren Herrscher Kubas.
Lansky, der dies durch seine „enigmatische Allianz” mit Batista möglich gemacht hatte, war Schattenherrscher und Zeremonienmeister, der Mambo war seine Musik, Frank Sinatra ließ sich gern blicken bei seinen Freunden. Die Fluglinie Pan American, die am Hotel Nacional beteiligt war, bot Billigflüge für 39 Dollar ab Miami an, man sah sich die Shows an und verschwand dann mit den Mädchen aufs Zimmer. 1956, mitten in den Revolutionswirren, eröffnete Lanskys Glanzstück, das Hotel Riviera mit 440 Zimmern. Ginger Rogers wurde für die Eröffnungsshow engagiert, Lansky selbst fungierte offiziell als „Küchendirektor”. Es war eine herrliche Zeit.
Aber auch wenn sie romantisiert wurde in Filmen wie in Coppolas „Der Pate II” oder Sidney Pollacks „Havana” – „Tatsache ist”, erinnert sich Comandante William Gálvez Rodríguez, der als junger Rebell mit Castro kämpfte, „dass die Casinos und das Geld – und vor allem die Verbindungen zwischen amerikanischen Gangstern, amerikanischen Konzernen und dem Batista-Regime – zum Symbol der Korruption für uns wurden. Wir schworen, dass sich das ändern würde, wenn wir an der Macht wären.” Und so ging Meyer Lanskys Traum am 1. Januar 1959 zu Ende. PETRA STEINBERGER
