The main objective of this study is to explore the practice of teachers and students in using short stories to teach and learn reading skills. The subject of the study was Atse Naod secondary school students and teachers. They were selected using simple random sampling. The findings indicated that the majority of the students were aware of their roles in using short stories but they had little awareness towards their teachers' role. In addition, some students were not exerting efforts to improve their English language reading skills through short stories. The study also revealed some problems that hold back students effort to use short stories: lack of Basic English skills, lack of confidence in using short stories and linguistic difficulty. In light of these findings, it is recommended that teachers are encouraged to use short stories to develop learners' reading skills by integrating all skills and incorporating practical lessons into their teaching-learning process. Besides, the school communities have to allocating sufficient short story books and encouraging students to read short stories for fostering learner reading skills development.
