Fred Herman's sparse, plaintive poems concern both the innocence and ecstasy of love, but a hint of mortality always lurks at the edges. Herman is in a reflective mood in this collection, invoking figures from his past and drawing on the romantic yet lonely imagery of the sea. The directness of his delivery is startling and beautiful in equal measure.
