The Courage of a Single Freckle began as therapeutic writing experience once Dr. Dodson also known as Dr. J, experienced racism in the workplace for the first time. Growing up in Memphis, TN and attending mostly mixed raced schools, Dr. J was pretty diverse in his friend spaces and experiences. However, attending The University of Tennessee Chattanooga was an eye opener where he was consistently the minority in many of his Psychology courses. Dr. Dodson graduated as the first Black male to obtain a Masters of Science Degree from Lipscomb University in Nashville, TN. Dr. Dodson was also the first black male to obtain a Doctor of Philosophy from The University of Memphis in Counselor education and Supervision. As a therapist, he has also had to do his own work, which began with being bullied in school, being racially profiled, and accepting his skin color. Learning how to navigate your own world especially when it did not come with a handbook can be challenging. From reading this book, you will learn that it's ok to be human, and seeing approval from others isn't navigating your space authentically, it's making others feel comfortable. The Courage of a Single Freckle allows the reader to become a writer of their own story. This book is about having others share their own truth of how they have been able to navigate their space of life experiences.
