He was born in Mexico, came to the U. S. in l945 illegally, became legal in 1955, was drafted after one year of college, served almost two years with the Armys Special Troops in Germany, was released from the army and rerturned to Imperial Valley College, went on to San Diego State University, graduating with a Bachelors Degree in Liberal Studies and a Masters Degree in Bilingual Education, taught elementary school grades 5th through 8th for 34 years and subbed in Kinder through 4th grades for six years. He also took a course in Childrens Literature and, after writing three short stories, quit when assigned a regular, full-length novel that required research, which he felt he did not have time to do because of his full-time teaching duties plus his night-time teaching of English to adults.
