Historically, school counselors were drawn from the teaching profession. However, today the majority of states no longer require classroom teaching experience for a school counselor certification. Reba J. Criswell, Ph.D., LPC, NCC, RPT, is an Assistant Professor at Southeastern Oklahoma State University. She is a member of the American Counseling Association and the American School Counselor Association. Dr. Criswell has extensive experience in counseling children in school, community, and private practice settings.
