This textbook contains introductory information about the rules of received English pronunciation, practical norms of connected speech and some theoretical problems concerning the sound structure of English. Our aim is to give a description of the articulations of English speech sounds in isolation, their modifications in connected speech and use in different sound sequences, words and sentences. The pronunciation of a foreign language possesses some specific features which are not found in the native language. Moreover, even when we are speaking English, learners may fail to understand what we mean. They may ask us "What?", "Sorry" or may misunderstand our ideas. Worse yet, the other speaker may stop the conversation. Each of these instances is a break in communication small or large. It is like a break in the movement of electricity in an electrical circuit. If the flow is stopped at any place in the circuit, the whole system stops. When something blocks the flow of an idea, the conversation stops too. Therefore, we need to know how to analyse the causes of such breaks in communication.
