Idiopathic Gingival Fibromatosis. Idiopathic gingival fibromatosis (IGF) is an enlargement localized or generalized of the gingival tissue characterized by an expansion and accumulation of the connective tissue, mainly collagen type I. Gingival fibromatosis is commonly induced as a side effect of systemic drugs (such as phenytoin, nifedipine, and cyclosporine). However, in some cases the gingival overgrowth is idiopathic. The enlargement is more prominent during the eruption of the primary and permanent teeth. Poor oral hygiene has been also associated with the condition. The diagnosis is established through history, clinical examination and histopathology. Surgical treatment including gingivectomy and gingivoplasty are usually the treatment.
