This study is based on Kenneth Burke's model of metonymy, and Devenyi distinguishes metonymic drama structure from the metaphoric, symbolic, and allegorical. Kristeva's theory of the semiotic and Barker's observations on the private body to dramatic texts are applied to argue that there is a relationship between fragmented representations of the subject and metonymic drama structure. Four plays are used: The Duchess of Malfi, Troilus and Cressida, Phedre, and Danton's Death.
