Although these institutions were founded and reformed at times to support democratization in these countries, their existence have come to represent the interests and needs of the dominant religion while similar solutions for other convictions have remained problematic.

Eren Ozalay-Sanl¿ studied at Böaziçi University in Istanbul and Georg-August-University of Göttingen with a focus on European Studies. She has published on the impact of the reforms towards EU accession on education in Turkey. She is currently working as an instructor at the European Studies department of Bahcesehir University in Istanbul.
