This book contains one literature review and three essays that explore some aspects of internal labor market. Using different data sources, we focus especially on how the importance of skill development or the profitability of specific skill affects the relationship between ageing workforce and the intensity of pay for performance scheme, on the role of this incentive pay system on employees' intrinsic and extrinsic satisfaction with job, and we make finally a comparative analysis between Japan, Sweden and U.S. on the effects of job satisfaction and job prospects on workers' intrinsic motivation. The first essay shows that there is a trade-off between the focus on skill development due to profitability of specific skill and the incentive intensity in presence of an ageing workforce. The second demonstrates that under the pay for performance scheme, employees' intrinsic satisfaction becomes more sensitive to pay levels and wage differentials. In the third, we find that the intrinsic commitment to the firm is strongly correlated to past experiences or job satisfaction among Swedish workers, while future expectations are the main determinants for workers in Japan and the US.
