Gestational Diabetes mellitus( GDM), itself is a subclinical inflammatory state which leads to release of inflammatory mediators and acute phase proteins like CRP into maternal circulation. This case-control study was conducted at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU),Dhaka, Bangladesh from 1stJuly 2016 to 30th June 2017 to determine an association between serum CRP level and Gestational Diabetes Mellitus. A total of 140 pregnant women in their 2nd and 3rd trimester of pregnancy who attended BSMMU antenatal clinic and admitted at Obstetric indoor were enrolled. Out of 140, case consisted of 70 pregnant mothers diagnosed with GDM and control consisted of 70 pregnant mothers without GDM . Blood samples were taken from the study subjects to estimate the serum CRP levels. The CRP levels were measured by an immunoturbidimetric test using automated analyzer: Beckman Coulter-AU680. The study concluded that there was an association between raised level of CRP with GDM. The pregnant mother with a raised level of CRP is 6.1 times having GDM than mothers with normal levels of CRP. Therefore, CRP level may be used as a screening marker for gestational diabetes.
