St Francis de Sales was born on 21st August 1567 at the family chateau at Thorens, near Annecy in the Savoy region of France. He was the eldest child of devoutly Catholic parents. Educated in Paris and Padua, he was ordained priest in 1593 and in 1602 was consecrated Bishop of Geneva. His goodness, patience and mildness became proverbial. The author of the classic book The Introduction to the Devout Life, he is the patron saint of writers. He died in 1662, and his feast is celebrated on 24th January. Canonized in 1665, St Francis de Sales was proclaimed Doctor of the Universal Church by Pope Pius IX in 1877.
