A view into the book you can find under "http://verlag.sandstein.de/reader/98-371_Bombensicher"Bombproof! Weesenstein, a Hiding Place for Artworks, in 1945During World War II, Weesenstein Castle was one of the major depots used for the evacuation of art collections from Dresden and other museums, as well as private collections. Irreplaceable treasures such as Rembrandt's "Saskia with the Red Flower," Caspar David Friedrich's "Trees and Bushes in the Snow," the "Maya Codex," and files for the Linz Führermuseum had to be protected from the destructive chaos of war. Behind massive castle walls these treasures found an (almost) bombproof hiding place until the Red Army's Trophy Commission seized and transported them to the Soviet Union at the end of the war. Amazing insights into the planning and implementation of the evacuation in difficult conditions, but also the occupying army's art theft illustrate the great dangers which this precious cultural heritage was exposed to. In addition, the dramatic, previously little-known era in the long history of the castle is brought to life by the experiences of the castle inhabitants during this time.
