Madrid, España, 3 de enero de 1951. Estudió Periodismo y Psicología y trabajó para diversos medios de comunicación (Hermano Lobo, Posible, Fotogramas, etc.). Actualmente colabora en el diario El País. En 1978 ganó el Premio Mundo de entrevistas, en 1980 el Nacional de Periodismo y en 2005 obtuvo el Rodríguez Santamaría de Periodismo en reconocimiento a su trayectoria profesional. Recientemente se le ha otorgado el Doctorado Honoris Causa por la universidad de Puerto Rico. Es autora de las novelas Crónica del desamor (1979), La función Delta (1981), Te trataré como a una reina (1983, Seix Barral), Amado amo (1988), Temblor (1990, Seix Barral), Bella y oscura (1993, Seix Barral), La hija del caníbal (1997, Premio Primavera), El corazón del tártaro (2001), La loca de la casa (2003, Premio Qué Leer al mejor libro del año en español y Premio Grinzane Cavour 2005 de literatura extranjera y), Historia del Rey Transparente (2005, Premio Qué Leer al mejor libro del año en español) e Instrucciones para salvar el mundo (2008). También es autora del libro de relatos Amantes y enemigos (1998), de las obras relacionadas con el periodismo España para ti para siempre (1976), Cinco años de país (1982), La vida desnuda (1994), Historias de mujeres (1995), Entrevistas (1996), Pasiones (1999), Estampas bostonianas y otros viajes (2002) y Lo mejor de Rosa Montero (2006), y de los libros infantiles El nido de los sueños (1991) y la serie protagonizada por Bárbara. Su obra está traducida a más de veinte idiomas.
