About the Author After completing studies at R.I.S.D. Elaine Backus began adult life as an interior designer. Ten years, four children, and one divorce later, she went to the University of Rhode Island to obtain teaching credentials. While there she was lured into the field of gerontology, ultimately becoming an Adjunct Professor at ten colleges and universities.
