He was born at West Looe, Cornwall, on 19 September 1937, the eldest son of a 6th Generation Fisherman Fernley Soady and his wife Edna May (nee) Toms. Michael was educated at Looe School, Liskeard Grammar School and Devonport Engineering College. He was conscripted for National Service, serving as a Non-Commissioned Officer in the Corps of Royal Military Police for two years from February 1960 - January 1962.
