This pervasive obsession with production and reproduction, not only characterized prehistory and the preindustrial world, but has persisted with important modifications, into the world of money markets, while at the same time retaining the ancient symbols. The eye is one such symbol.

The Author: Pierre Bettez Gravel is Professor Emeritus at Northern Illinois University. He obtained a Ph.D. in anthropology from the University of Michigan. He has done fieldwork in Africa, Greece, France and the U.S.A. under the sponsorship of the Wenner-Gren Foundation, the Sigma Xi, the Institute for Scientific Research in Central Africa, the Centre for Social Science Research in Athens, and others. He has published books and articles on power structures, on piracy and banditry, and on fieldwork.
