To lose teeth and be obliged to use removableprostheses might impact dramatically on youreveryday activities. Prosthodontics is aiming toenable the patients to eat whatever theylike, but also to make them feel sociallycomfortable with artificial teeth. However, there isan individual diversity which makes it impossible toassess the impact of tooth loss without concern forindividual attributes. The aim of this thesis was tostudy the impact of oral prostheses on oral health-related quality of life (OHRQOL). Additional aimswere to study social inequalities in oral health, attitudes towards costs for dental care and careutilization. The number of remaining teeth was moreimportant than the type of denture when explainingOHRQOL. The type of replacement, in terms of fixedor removable denture, was less important for thosewith few or no remaining teeth, than for all others.Interactions were observed between number ofremaining teeth and type of denture whenexplaining OHRQOL. As a whole the thesis shows thatsocial and dental conditions and cost for dentalcare play a great role for dental care utilizationas well as for OHRQOL.
