This book draws on a range of sources to explore the numerous challenges confronting the teaching fraternity in Zambia. It emphasises the need to relook the place of the teacher if teacher effectiveness and competence are to be achieved and learner outcomes improved. The book starts by providing an overview of the structure of the Zambian education system. The book argues that the many challenges that Zambian teachers face are a result of indifferent government policies and practices, failure of the teaching fraternity to ensure professionalism within its ranks, and unfavourable societal attitudes. These are all critical factors that impact on the performance of teachers. Lastly, the book highlights the negative consequences that teacher challenges have on the quality and effectiveness of the teacher, the teaching profession and on the quality of educational delivery and learner outcomes.This book should be helpful to policy makers, teacher educators and school administrators andanyone else with an interest in improving the quality and effectiveness of the school teacher.
