Baqie Badawi Muhammad was an acknowledged authority on Sudanese arts and culture, where her field research has provided unique understandings of 20th century African women and diaspora artists in particular. She received two Ph.D.'s from Indiana University, in African Art History and Folklore, and served as Visiting Scholar at IUB and IUPUI
