His extensive output provides countless examples to the contrary. Among his chamber-music gems is the Piano Trio No. 2 dating from 1892 which is presented here. This is a work of essentially elegiac character offset by virtuosity and complex writing, all handled with consummate skill by the composer. For this new edition the autograph of the Trio was consulted, and as Edition Peters is only the second publisher to issue the piece, a substantial and illuminating re-appraisal of the source material can be expected. Camille Saint-Saëns war ein Universalist von geradezu enzyklopädischer Bildung: Er machte sich verschiedentlich einen Namen als Philosoph, Dichter und Dramatiker, als Astronom, Naturwissenschaftler, Archäologe und Ethnologe, sogar als Zeichner und Karikaturist. Seine Hauptpassion aber wurde die Musik. Als Komponist war Saint-Saëns, der als Einzelgänger galt, keiner Schule angehört und keinerlei Reformbewegung vertritt (Charles Gounod), seinen Zeitgenossen verdächtig, und seine Werke gerieten in den Ruf, intellektuell, emotionslos-glatt und unromantisch zu sein.Saint-Saëns umfangreiches Schaffen bietet zahllose Gegenbeispiele. Zu den kammermusikalischen Perlen gehört das nun vorgelegte Klaviertrio Nr. 2 aus dem Jahr 1892 ein Werk elegischen Charakters, das Virtuosität und komplexe Satzstruktur auf vollendete Weise verbindet. Für die Neuausgabe wurde als Quelle das Autograph des Trios herangezogen. Die Ausgabe der Edition Peters ist die erste moderne Neuausgabe seit Erscheinen des Erstdrucks.
