Major Clanger is the father of the family, forever inventing all kinds of curious contraptions. Mother Clanger tends to their home with steady kindness and a comforting nature. Small Clanger, their adventurous son, is eager to explore and make marvellous discoveries, though his curiosity sometimes leads him into mischief. Tiny Clanger, the youngest, has a generous spirit and embraces everyone she meets with open arms.
Alongside the Clangers live their friends: the Soup Dragon and her playful Baby Dragon, who live deep underground and provide the Clangers with delicious green soup; the Iron Chicken, the Music Trees, the Froglets, and the gentle Hoots.
Fishing in his music boat, Small Clanger catches a little Hoot, a trumpet-looking creature. He leaves the Hoot, but it falls into a cave. Later, a mysterious, deep sound begins to echo throughout the Clangers' planet. Small Clanger finds the little Hoot grew into a very large Hoot. He makes an absolute raucous, and Major Clanger stuffs its mouth to stop the noise. Feeling sorry for the Hoot, Tiny instead places musical notes in its mouth. Making sweet sounds of music, the Hoot now plays lovely tunes.
