As one of a close-knit group of trainee nurses and medical students at Glasgow's Western Infirmary she meets Adam Buchanan, who proves to be a good friend. Then there's Glasgow-Italian Mario Rossi, with his continental charm and his dazzling smile. When Mario is interned as an enemy alien, Liz turns to Adam for comfort and support.
With Adam, she experiences the terror of the Clydebank Blitz and heart-breaking personal tragedies. When the war at last comes to an end, Mario returns home to Glasgow. Will he and Liz pick up where they left off or is there a different decision to be made?
