A high uric acid level (hyperuricemia) is an excess of uric acid in the blood and can be caused, when the body either produces too much uric acid or the kidneys excrete too little uric acid. A high uric acid level (hyperuricemia) is an excess of uric acid in the blood and can be caused, when the body either produces too much uric acid or the kidneys excrete too little uric acid. Uric acid is produced from the breakdown of body's cells and of purine, a substance found in many foods. It passes through the kidneys, where most of it leaves your body when you urinate. Risk factors that may cause a high uric acid level in the blood include diuretic medications (water pills), drinking too much alcohol, heredity, hormonal disorders (hypothyroidism, after menopause), obesity, psoriasis, purine-rich foods (organ meat, game meat), metabolic disorders, a renal insufficiency and other medical conditions (high blood pressure, diabetes, high levels of fat and cholesterol in the blood, arteriosclerosis). A high uric acid level can cause kidney stones (urate crystals may collect in the kidneys), chronic kidney disease, kidney failure, high blood pressure and heart disease. Excessive amounts of uric acid can cause solid crystals. These uric acid crystals can build up in the joints and nearby tissues, forming sharp, needle-like urate crystals, hard lumpy deposits called tophi and result in painful attacks of gout. Gout, a form of arthritis, can lead to joint damage and is characterized by sudden onset of severe pain attacks (often at night), tenderness, heat, redness, swelling and inflammation in and around the joint. Gout usually affects the large joint of the big toe (with a sensation like the big toe is on fire), but it can also occur in the feet, ankles, knees, hands and wrists.
