The ranks of individuals reaching the age of 65 increase by about 10,000 individuals every day and that growth is projected to continue over a 19-year period that began on January 1, 2011. As the population ages, the ratio of older adults to working-age adults, also known as the old-age dependency ratio, is projected to rise. By 2020, there will be just over three-and-a-half working-age adults for every retirement-age person, a ratio that will decline by 2060 to just under two-and-a-half working-age adults for every retirement-age person. Key facctors involving the provision of necessary health care services and figuring out how to pay for them are among the dominant policy issues analyzed in this book.
