This detailed and important study is a powerful critical analysis of the common Western notion that views the hijab as a symbol of Muslim women's oppression and a restriction of their freedom. In a profound and complex intellectual construction, the researcher seeks to construct a positive theory of the hijab, challenging the common cultural view of Muslim women as subject to their complete subjugation and absolute domination by men. It also challenges the more complex arguments advanced by liberal feminist figures such as Fatima Mernissi, Arlene MacLeod, and others who have sought to criticize women's choice to wear the hijab as a retreat from the liberation movement. The author examines some of these authors' assumptions, examining their validity and accuracy. She then argues that the view of the hijab as a manifestation of oppression in Islam is based on a liberal perspective on the ideas of "freedom" and "equality." This liberal understanding obscures other ways of understanding these two ideas and may provide a more positive approach to thinking about the wearing of the hijab. The author believes that wearing the hijab may be a gateway to liberation from the tyranny of the beauty myth and the image of the ideal, graceful woman. "The Western View of the Hijab" draws on numerous theoretical disciplines: political theory, feminism, anthropology, sociology, history, Middle Eastern studies, and Islamic studies. In a wide-ranging study, the author begins with the historical background behind the Western stereotype of the hijab and the impact of the colonial era, all the way to modern veiling trends in both Muslim and non-Muslim countries. Her analysis includes personal interviews with a group of Muslim women from various backgrounds in Toronto, Canada. While the author exposes the falsity of common and entrenched myths about Muslim women and the hijab, she calls for due respect for the voices of devout Muslim women, arguing that women's liberation and equality are at the root of Islam itself.
