An interesting feature of this book is the rich illustrative series, which includes the original 1899 drawings taken from the first edition of the book. The text is given in modern spelling. During his lifetime, the French artist Gustave Doré created hundreds of illustrations of biblical stories. His illustrations were used in various editions of the Bible in various languages in Europe in the 19th century, and later in the countries of North and South America. Gustave Doré's contemporaries criticized his work and doubted his competence as an artist.
