An exceptionally powerful storm rages in a small coastal village in Cornwall. The lady of the manor has been rendered unconscious by the storm's savagery. A grizzly murder is discovered the next day. Some villagers believe the eerie storm and the murder are the work of the ancient Great Horned One who occasionally searches for a sacrifice riding on his fiery horse. No one knows the murder victim.
Inspector Dickie Geever, the second son of the Earl of Cornwall, who knows nothing about solving murders, is sent as the primary detective because of his family influence. Inspector John Ferguson is sent as second in command by their boss at Scotland Yard because he needs the murder actually solved so it doesn't become a supernatural unsolvable crime.
The two policemen must stay in an old dower house on the manor property because the only other place for them-the Crown Inn-caught fire during the strange storm.
Scotland Yard detectives never become involved with anyone connected to a case.
The village is very proud of their doctor-a woman. She must also stay in the dower because her apartment and office was damaged in the fire. John Ferguson and Doc Abby are very attracted to each other immediately.
