He was brought with others on a long, exhausting journey during which many died, across a raging sea the likes of which he had never seen before. It took more than four months, to be sold. He and others like him are auctioned off after having their bodies painted to shine like good ebony. And his tragedy begins on the ground without a glimmer of hope. The novel was published in 1976 and was translated into about 35 languages, selling more than 50 million copies and becoming the basis for a television series of the same name that achieved unparalleled success.
