The World Health Organization (WHO) has highlighted the severe impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on mental health, urging countries to give greater attention to this issue. Mental health remains one of the most neglected areas of public health, despite being among the sectors most affected by the pandemic. Globally, nearly 1 billion people live with mental disorders, 3 million die each year due to harmful alcohol use, and 1 person dies by suicide every 40 seconds. The COVID-19 pandemic, which confined billions of people worldwide, has worsened mental health conditions[i] [ii] [iii].
The increase in both perpetrators and victims of abuse during this period has further contributed to the decline in mental well-being. The pandemic, coupled with the Industrial Revolution 4.0, has drawn greater attention to the importance of self-awareness and mental readiness for future challenges such as those posed by global crises like COVID-19.
Furthermore, this issue aligns with the third and eleventh Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which emphasize promoting well-being and sustainable communities to create a better world through cooperation, mutual support, and care for the environment. Keeping a "record of happiness" fosters positive energy, gratitude for blessings received, and strategies for managing negative emotions. Self-awareness nurtures social concern, while the paradigm of self-love within self-awareness promotes optimism and reinforces the belief in one's intrinsic value. By cultivating social care (mutual cooperation) and reducing harm to the world, this approach fosters a cosmopolitan mindset, which can serve as a first step toward achieving global peace and harmony.
