Human exposure to various levels of natural and man-made radiation is undesirable, as high doses have harmful effects. Recently, scientists have focused on studying exposure to low doses of radioactive radiation emitted by naturally occurring radioactive isotopes such as uranium. Radon gas, for example, accounts for approximately half of the average effective dose of natural radiation for the general human population. Its concentration in homes varies greatly, entering primarily from the ground through voids in the building structure and, to a lesser extent, through building materials. Althoug...
Although radon was discovered at the beginning of the last century, its relationship to lung cancer among miners was not determined until the late 1960s. Radon has been proven to be a source of this disease, especially with prolonged exposure to high concentrations. Many homes and buildings around the world contain high concentrations of this gas without their occupants being aware of it. Intense efforts are being made to identify these homes and buildings and develop effective solutions to address the problem. International and national environmental agencies in various countries have advised their citizens about the dangers of this gas, ways to prevent it, and limits its concentration. This book is accessible to everyone; it provides specialists and non-specialists alike with a comprehensive understanding of radon gas, clarifying its nature and sources, its impact, the extent of its health hazard, and treatment methods. It also identifies the beneficial uses of this radioactive gas. Al-Obeikan Publishing
