This study, which is based on an analysis of numerous historical sources, published but mostly unpublished, as well as oral interviews, is part of the wider research framework concerning the political role and intervention of the army during the 20th century in Greece. The 1935-1945 period is a turning point, as it is characterized by the cancellation of the last elements of irredentist patriotism within the Greek army. The collapse of the army in Asia Minor in 1922 turned libertarianism from a military government project into a political deception, and the lack of a grand patriotic vision led many, especially young officers, to their political autonomy, even against the factions that until then controlled the corps of the officers. Therefore, this period ushers in a form of interventionism that wanted the military not to be an actor at the service of politics, but an impersonal sovereign and owner of the political function on its own account, a trend that was maintained until the imposition of the 1967 dictatorship.
